Catching Drills

DRILL #1: NOVICE CATCH.
Purpose:  The purpose of this tee ball drill is to help the tee ball player focus on maintaining correct form when catching a baseball.  Additionally, this will also build confidence for the tee ball player when catching baseballs.
Equipment:  This drill can be performed with a tennis ball or a reduced impact safety baseball (RISB) and without a tee ball glove to prevent pop-up injuries.  Place a training disc or cone on the ground and another about 15 feet from that position to mark the position the player should stand.
Execution:
  1. Have the player stand at one training disc or cone in a fielding position with their least dominant hand in front with fingers up.
  2. The coach standing at the other training disc will throw the tennis ball or RISB underhand to the player.
  3. The player is to catch the ball with their least dominant hand with fingers up.
  4. Observe how the catch is made and make corrections as appropriate.
  5. The player will throw the ball back to the coach.
  6. Repeat previous steps several times.


DRILL #2: NOVICE GLOVE CATCH.
Purpose:  The purpose of this tee ball drill is to help the tee ball player focus on the maintaining correct form when catching a baseball.
Equipment:  This drill will be performed with a tee ball glove and tee-ball.  Place a training disc or cone on the ground and another about 15 feet from that position to mark the position the player should stand.
Execution:
  1. Have player stand at one training disc or cone in a fielding position with gloved hand in front with fingers up.
  2. The coach will throw the baseball underhand to the player.
  3. The player is to catch the ball with their gloved hand with knuckles up.
  4. Observe how the catch was made and make corrections as appropriate.
  5. The player will throw the ball back to the coach.
  6. Repeat previous steps several times.


DRILL #3: INTERMEDIATE GLOVE CATCH.
Purpose:  The purpose of this tee ball drill is to help the tee ball player focus on maintaining correct form when catching a baseball.
Equipment:  This drill will be performed with a baseball glove and baseball.  Place a training disc or cone on the ground and another about 30 feet from that position to mark the position the player should stand.
Execution:
  1. Have player stand at one training disc or cone in a fielding position with gloved hand in front with fingers up.
  2. The coach will throw the baseball overhand to the player.
  3. The player is to catch the ball with their gloved hand with knuckles up.
  4. Observe how the catch was made and make corrections as appropriate.
  5. The player will throw the ball back to coach.
  6. Repeat previous steps several times.
